Julia Amanda Perry (1924–1979) began her music education at
Westminster Choir College in New Jersey, studied at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts, and later enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York. She moved to Europe in 1952 to continue her education, studying composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Luigi Dallapiccola in Florence, and conducting at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Perry was awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships and won several prizes for her compositions in both the USA and Europe. Her œuvre includes works for orchestra, violin and piano concertos, chamber music, cantatas, and operas. Several strokes in the early 1970s meant she had to live her remaining years with limited physical mobility.
