Julius Eastman (1940–1990) was a US-American composer, pianist, and singer. He began studying composition and piano at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1959. After a successful debut as a concert pianist at the Town Hall in New York in 1966, Eastman moved to Buffalo (NY) where he joined the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts and worked as an Assistant Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo. During this time, he composed numerous pieces for the S.E.M. Ensemble that he had co-founded. In 1975, Eastman moved to New York City, where he wrote several of his important minimalist compositions in a short space of time. Eastman died in 1990, after which he was almost completely forgotten. His work has been rediscovered in recent years.
